Retirable is proud to welcome Stephany Kirkpatrick, CFP®, seasoned fintech entrepreneur and CEO & Founder of Orum, to its Board of Directors. Stephany brings over a decade of success to her role with experience at progressive solutions provider Pension Architects, leading financial planning startups like LearnVest and Fortune 100 companies like Northwestern Mutual.
The Retirable team is honored to work with an industry veteran who understands fully how technology solutions can be leveraged to improve people’s lives. Retirable was looking for a board member who could aid in continued growth, while benefiting current and future customers. Stephany’s passion for furthering our mission to empower a confident, worry-free retirement for everyone provides an ideal partnership to bring Retirable to its next phase of growth.
The Retirable team is thrilled to announce her addition to the board. In her own words, Stephany recently shared why she is joining Retirable.
How were you first introduced to Retirable and what caught your eye about its mission?
I met Tyler and Ian when Retirable was just getting started and I was immediately drawn to the problem they were solving. I started my career in the retirement industry and there is so much innovation yet to be created in order to help the millions of people in the “critical 10” final years of pre-retirement plan confidently for their future. I love that Tyler (CEO & Co-Founder of Retirable) is a CFP® and has worked as a retirement advisor – his personal connection to the problem and depth of knowledge is impressive.
How does your experience leading companies and startups inform how you advise Retirable?
Advising a company enables me to compile unique insights on the problem space that I have seen first-hand to help the co-founders and the team see around corners. Operator experience at various types of companies at multiple stages gives me a perspective that’s broader than just the startup landscape. In turn, this helps me work side-by-side with Tyler, Ian and Brian not only as a board member but also as a day-to-day partner when needed.
Based on your expertise as a CFP®, what did you see as unique within Retirable’s offerings that piqued your interest? What made you want to join the Retirable board?
Most company builders are young. In the financial planning world we’d say they are at the accumulation stage of their lives — focused on how to accumulate savings and wealth for the future. As a result, a lot of financial advice innovation is designed to serve career-stage retirement problems.
What really drew me to Retirable is that it’s a team of young, curious innovators wanting to solve a problem that isn’t being tackled today: how to create reliable retirement income when you are nearing retirement and/or in retirement. At this stage of life, there is little to no time left to accumulate and save. Millions of Americans are facing these hard questions about their retirement and have lacked access to financial advice as they exit the workplace. This is a very clear need with 75 million Americans set to retire by 2030, on that Retirable is addressing with their innovation.
What did you identify in the Retirable team that led you to take on a board position?
I see passion, conviction and a personal connection with each of the co-founders to the problem they are solving. From my experience, there is nothing more powerful than a team of people who care deeply about solving something as big and impactful as retirement. The care, compassion and empathy the team has for folks facing retirement combined with the talent of financial planning experience, engineering and product expertise is unparalleled.
I want to see retirement income solved, and Retirable touches a very personal life mission I have to help those often overlooked by traditional financial advisors find a path towards a confident, worry-free retirement.
How do you see the future of retirement planning unfold within the next 10 years? 20 years?
The future of retirement planning hinges not only on the growth years (accumulation) and the technology to power better investment options early on, but the technology to innovate the withdrawal years (decumulation) as well.
I see the future holding more automation, and I see the “retirement paycheck” as the biggest innovation to come. Instead of focusing on having a set dollar amount saved by a certain date, I think retirement planning will focus on ways to create steady and reliable income that feels like the paycheck everyone was used to getting during their working years. I am so excited to see Retirable push boundaries and be on the forefront of opportunities to dramatically improve what retirement looks like for the American household.
